These attacks have over the years undermined university leadership and provoked students, staff and faculty. University leaders responded positively, helping to build more dynamic and well-endowed centers for this work than on any other peer campus in the country. Many students, staff and faculty, especially those from minority backgrounds, feel that they have suffered setback after setback at the hands of hostile politicians and deferential administrators. Public and private university leaders have become more distant from their own campuses as they focus on fund-raising and testifying before hostile federal and state legislatures. There are, of course, good reasons why university leaders should not give in to protesters on these and other points.

The Biden administration issued new rules on Friday cementing protections for L.G.B.T.Q. students under federal law and updating the procedure schools must follow when investigating and adjudicating cases of alleged sexual misconduct on campus. The new rules, which take effect on Aug. 1, effectively broadened the scope of Title IX, the 1972 law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding. They extend the law’s reach to prohibit discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And the administration took steps to roll back some of the more rigid campus sexual assault policies issued during the Trump administration, which drew condemnation from Democrats, including Mr. Biden, for being overly deferential to students accused of sexual violence.

While Nikki Haley has, until recently, run a fairly positive campaign, she has endured relentless criticism from Donald J. Trump and others in his orbit. Her 22-year-old son, Nalin Haley, is not so inclined to pull his punches. Why America loves the NFL

One, sports fans will go to great lengths (including piracy) to find the content they're looking for. The NFL has done, I think, a really good job of continuing to evolve their product to make it as TV-friendly as it can be. Brian Fuhrer, senior vice president at NielsenThe NFL also benefits from the deference that networks show the league. Broadcast's core audience is typically older, so when NFL games come on in the fall it draws younger viewers back in. But even if things aren't as good for the NFL, they're still going to be pretty good — and a lot better, ratings-wise, than anything else.

Gen. Warren Wells was removed from the job on Friday by Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, just hours after she was given the email. Members of Congress have been frustrated for years with the military's prosecution of sexual assault cases and they pushed to remove commanders from the decision-making process on the cases. According to officials, the woman, now a civilian, then went to the defense advisory committee that was set up to make recommendations on the sexual assault prosecution overhaul and submitted additional records. Officials said the email from Wells to his staff was among the documents she provided to the committee. Wormuth received copies of the documents on Friday and after seeing the email fired Wells later that day.

Will Trump’s Barbs Land Him Behind Bars?

It was a historic and jarring event when FBI agents searched former President Donald Trump's home last year to look for classified documents he was accused of hoarding. "Courts and prosecutors have to become normalized to the idea of detaining Trump – if he continues to violate gag orders and/or if he is convicted at trial," Signorelli says. Less-powerful defendants have been punished with time behind bars for being in contempt of court (including violating gag orders) or threatening authorities. Sam Bankman-Fried, the former billionaire crypto trader, was put behind bars in August weeks before his fraud trial after giving a media outlet private writings by a witness. While courts are sensitive to First Amendment protections – especially for someone running for president – Trump is pushing the legal envelope, Eisen says.

The "neural network planner" that Shroff and others were working on took a different approach. Faced with a situation, the neural network chooses a path based on what humans have done in thousands of similar situations. By early 2023, the neural network planner project had analyzed 10 million clips of video collected from the cars of Tesla customers. By mid-April 2023, it was time for Musk to try the new neural network planner. "Oh, wow," he said, "even my human neural network failed here, but the car did the right thing."

Vivek Ramaswamy wants voters to know he’s young, vigorous — and did he mention young? “You’re a blank slate — you’re 38 years old,” Mr. Ramaswamy, the first Republican millennial presidential candidate, imagined a viewer as saying about him. Chris Christie of New Jersey quickly pointed out, adding, “I’m afraid we’re dealing with the same kind of amateur.”But Mr. Ramaswamy made it clear that he wasn’t going to be deferential to the more experienced candidates onstage. He addressed former vice president Mike Pence as “Mike,” familiarly, and didn’t back down when Mr. Pence declared, “We don’t need to bring in a rookie.” Instead, he made his newcomer status a combative rallying cry. “I’m the only person on the stage who isn’t bought and paid for, so I can say this,” Mr. Ramaswamy said in response to a question about climate change policy.

For Biden, Trump’s third indictment is undoubtedly the most personal. The White House declined to comment on Trump’s indictment Tuesday, referring questions to the Department of Justice. The White House learned of the indictment through media reports, a White House official said, as was the case with past indictments. After Trump was indicted in June, Biden was repeatedly pressed for comment on the historic first federal indictment of a former president. Ahead of Trump’s indictment Tuesday, a Biden campaign official said the campaign once again did not intend to fundraise off a Trump indictment, determining that the risks of fundraising off the indictment – which would feed Republican attacks of a politicized prosecution – outweighed the potential benefits.

DeSantis’ remarks Monday in Tega Cay, South Carolina, were a near carbon copy of the speech he has delivered at campaign stops for weeks. Over the weekend, a spokesperson for DeSantis’ campaign confirmed to CNN it let go of some staffers, after Politico reported that “fewer than 10 staffers” in event planning were cut on Thursday. In the Simon & Schuster-published book, "So Help Me God," Pence vividly described how Trump tried to pressure him against certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 victory. Hillary Clinton received an $8 million advance for her memoir "Living History," about her time as First Lady. According to Politico's Jonathan Martin, Obama has recently hosted a series of "informal, but lengthy private meetings with groups of next-generation House Democrats." One of the topics of dinner conversation, per Martin, was how Democrats can avoid coming off as elitist. Before the 2022 midterms, Obama returned to the campaign trail where he tore into the Republican Party and Trump. It is likely that Obama will eventually take on a high-profile role as the 2024 campaign heats up. Opinion | A President Governing From Behind Bars?!

First, it seems increasingly plausible that he will become the first former president to be convicted of a felony. Second, he also seems increasingly likely to win the Republican nomination for president, with the betting markets also giving him about a 22 percent chance of going on and actually being elected president. But some smart lawyers believe that for Trump, the “peril is extreme,” as one former federal prosecutor put it. Still, deference may end upon conviction, and defendants in less serious cases have ended up with substantial prison sentences. And during Trump’s presidency, Reality Winner leaked a single document and was sentenced to more than five years in prison.

The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him. Yet, Robinson believes, by echoing Trump’s claims of unfair treatment, the other candidates are encouraging Republican voters to accept his framing of the race.
